Spoiler alert: It was a rollercoaster of emotions, filled with new friendships, cultural revelations, and groundbreaking solutions.
Passion Takes Flight:
In my journey of volunteerism, I discovered a profound connection with the struggles of countless young minds. Witnessing their yearning for a safe space to express themselves, unburdened by judgment, and grappling with the challenges of navigating a world tainted by violence, a flame of determination was kindled within me. It was this deeply emotional understanding that drove me to immerse myself in empowering young people in peace processes.
PICTURE THIS: This transformative commitment began in 2017 when I attended the Latin America and Caribbean Regional Consultation For the Progress Study on Youth, Peace and Security Panama City, Panama and reached a climax in 2023 when I found myself in Bogotá, Colombia. The decision to take a plunge into fostering peace and understanding among youth was not just professional; it was a heartfelt response to the poignant narratives of young lives in search of sanctuary amid chaos. My journey is a testament to the unwavering belief that through genuine engagement, we can sow the seeds of positive change in the lives of these resilient individuals.
Lost in Translation: Almost
Before I spill the beans on the adventure, let's address the language barrier. My Spanish game was, well, a work in progress. Communicating wasn't always smooth, but thankfully, the organizers had our backs with translators. Crisis averted!
Setting the Stage:
The meeting wasn't your typical conference; it was a mission. We aimed to kick things up a notch for the Youth, Peace, and Security agenda in Latin America and the Caribbean. Picture this: crafting a regional narrative, - “collective and shared story that encapsulates the common experiences, values, and aspirations of a specific geographical region. It goes beyond individual stories or national perspectives, aiming to weave together a cohesive and comprehensive account of the region's history, challenges, achievements, and future goals,” building a network and sketching out a roadmap for action.
Cracking the Code of Resolution 2250:
Resolution 2250 stands as a significant milestone, recognizing the invaluable contribution of young people in the realm of peacebuilding. This pivotal resolution, adopted by the United Nations Security Council, specifically calls upon nations to empower the youth to assume leadership roles in peace processes. It delineates a structured framework comprising five pillars: participation, protection, prevention, partnerships, and disengagement and reintegration. These pillars serve as the guiding principles underpinning our collective mission towards fostering sustainable peace and security.
Challenges Unveiled, Solutions Shared:
In the Latin American and Caribbean scene, there are numerous challenges. Violence, especially gender and political, was on the rise, impacting everyone, especially the youth.
Day 1: The Energizer Bunny Unleashed:
The first day was a whirlwind of cultures colliding, ideas flowing, and energy soaring. We spilled our guts on the challenges and victories of pushing the Youth Peace and Security Agenda forward. My agenda? Getting the youth involved, steering them clear of crime, and securing funds for the warriors championing the YPS cause. Oh, and let's not forget the infectious energy in the room—everyone was pumped for the YPS agenda!
Caribbean Chronicles:
Navigating the challenges in the Caribbean was like untangling a spider's web. Interventions needed a makeover; they had to be youth-led, not just youth-targeted. Representatives from Trinidad, Suriname, Grenada, Barbados, Belize, Jamaica, and St. Vincent took the stage, exploring peace processes, regional partnerships, and tackling socio-economic issues.
Threads that bind:
Funding emerged as a critical factor in our deliberations, a force both essential and obstructive in our narrative. Political bias, discrimination, and a notable lack of accountability became significant impediments, erecting formidable roadblocks for the youth at the forefront of peace and security initiatives. Yet, in the face of these challenges, a glimmer of hope pierced through the gloom – a collective determination to acknowledge the youth as pivotal agents of change in the complex landscape of peace and security.
A Mosaic of Experiences:
Bogotá became a canvas of diverse experiences—meeting new souls, decoding different cultures, and weaving solutions together. Our challenges might differ, but the desire to create a safer, more inclusive world unites us all.
Day 2 was the day we rolled up our sleeves, cracked our knuckles, and dove deep into crafting a narrative on Youth, Peace, and Security (YPS) in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). Are you ready for the deets? Let's go!
Morning Buzz:
Fueled up with some Colombian coffee, the morning kicked off with a buzz of excitement. We were about to embark on a mission to set the foundations for a regional narrative and roadmap on YPS. Picture this: representatives from different corners of the region, fueled by passion crafting a story of hope and resilience.
Crafting the Narrative:
The morning session was like an artistic collaboration. We were painting a canvas with stories of triumph, resilience, and the unwavering spirit of youth in the face of challenges. It wasn't just about sharing problems; it was about weaving a narrative that showcased the incredible potential of young people in bringing about positive change.
Roadmap Unveiling:
As the day unfolded, we transitioned into roadmap mode. Imagine a GPS guiding us through the twists and turns of YPS implementation. Each country had its unique path, yet we were united in the common goal of advancing the YPS agenda. The roadmap wasn't just about directions; it was a collective vision, a blueprint for a more peaceful and inclusive LAC.
Teamwork Makes the Dream Work:
Collaboration was the name of the game. Representatives from different countries shared their insights, challenges, and success stories. It was like a potluck of ideas, and we feasted on the rich diversity of experiences. From Trinidad's innovative youth programs to Jamaica's grassroots initiatives, each contribution added a layer to the collective narrative.
Pitfalls and Detours:
Of course, no roadmap is complete without acknowledging the potential pitfalls and detours. We delved into the challenges unique to each country, recognizing that the journey to peace is never a straight line. Funding hurdles, political roadblocks, and cultural nuances – we marked them all on our map, ready to face them head-on.
Lunchtime Bonding:
Amidst all the strategizing and planning, we took a breather during lunch. Picture this: a diverse group of individuals, each with a unique story, sharing laughter and breaking bread together. It was a reminder that, beyond the discussions, these connections would be the threads weaving our collective narrative.
Afternoon Action:
The afternoon session was all about action items. We translated our narrative and roadmap into tangible steps. From policy recommendations to grassroots initiatives, everyone had a role to play. It was a dance of diplomacy, activism, and pragmatism, each step bringing us closer to a more secure and harmonious region.
Closing Reflections:
As the day drew to a close, we gathered for reflections. The room buzzed with a sense of accomplishment. We weren't just crafting narratives and roadmaps; we were laying the groundwork for a future where the youth played a pivotal role in shaping peace and security in LAC.
Nightfall and Anticipation:
As night fell over Bogotá, the air was thick with anticipation. Day 2 had been a whirlwind of creativity, collaboration, and commitment. We left the meeting room with hearts full of hope and a roadmap in hand, ready to bring the dreams of a more peaceful LAC into reality.
As I bid Bogotá farewell, I carry not just memories but a renewed sense of purpose. The Regional Intergenerational Meeting was more than an event; it was a convergence of dreams, a celebration of diversity, and a testament to the power of collaboration. Until the next escapade, adiós, Bogotá!
