St. Hugh's High School Positive Society
Positive society in High Schools aim to encourage students to give of their services, while giving them the necessary skills needed to be employable, empowered, and creating opportunities for growth. The Society will deepen Youth Engagement & Capacity Building in High Schools while creating a space for students to grow as they continue on their academic journey. Our society will also equip students with the necessary skills on how to be effective advocates and leaders at the community and national level.
St. Hugh's High School for Girls came alive as we officially launched The Positive Society on November 1, 2017, which marks the start of youth month, themed "Substance Ova Hype." St. Hughs was selected to host the launch as our Vice President and student at the institution, Tianna Thompson, saw it as a fitting opportunity to empower, inspire & engage youths to make a positive impact through volunteerism & advocacy.
Tianna is a young woman driven by excellence and the need for change and upliftment of youths. The youngest "positive ambassador" and is a true giver by heart.
According to Krystal Tomlinson, Communications Professional | Self-Management Strategist and guest speaker at the launch,"It is clear that our youth want an opportunity to make an impact and to become active participants in their communities. These Positive Societies will provide a safe and structured space for them to serve and experience unimaginable personal growth. I love how energized this first cohort is and how deeply interested they are in how they can become change makers and solution builders not later, but now"
Krystal Tomlinson is also the Founder of Teens On Purpose. Teens On Purpose is a national call to action for youth who are affected by financial and emotional constraints. The school tour brings positive teen coaching messages that inspire excellence in teens who need to be reminded of their potential and not daunted by the circumstance.
The society thus far have the support of corporate philanthropy company Grace Kennedy Foundation.
Samantha Miller, president for the Organization is excited to be leading her team to empower & engage students nationally "My mom always told me I was a challenger of norms and societal norms, so she knew I would be involved in making change. But I was told [by others], ‘You'll always be that girl from Waltham Park Road [an inner city community] and never amount to anything.’ I use all those negative comments to motivate me to be better than my situation and circumstances. I always thought my voice would not count. But I have found my voice now and I’m putting it to use."
